MINISTRY OF YOUTH AND SPORTS NORTHERN DIVISION CONDUCTS DEIA PROGRAM.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports in the Northern Division, Fiji recently conducted the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award (DEIA) journey with a total of 22 participants, comprising 18 boys and 4 girls. The program saw 17 participants in the bronze level and 5 in the silver level.
The program was organized by the MYS from the team in Labasa, which involved the Doguru Youth Club, Blackstone Youth Club, and Vuniyalayala Youth Club. Doguru Youth Club had the highest number of participants with 17, while Blackstone Youth Club had 2 participants, and Vuniyalayala Youth Club had 3 female participants.
The DEIA program is a global youth development program that empowers young people to become leaders and active citizens. The program encourages personal development, community involvement, and adventurous journeys. Participants undertake activities in four areas: service, skill, physical recreation, and adventurous journey.
To facilitate the training, 2 National Fire Authority personnel were invited to provide basic training for the participants. The training involved basic fire safety skills and techniques, including extinguishing fires and first aid, different methods of tying a knot, parade training, hiking, and talanoa sessions.
The program was a huge success, with participants expressing their delight in being part of the program. The DEIA program is an excellent way for young people to develop their leadership skills, explore new challenges, and engage with their communities. The Labasa MYS team is committed to continuing the DEIA program to empower more young people in the community.
