Ministry of Youth and Sports – Youths Creativity helps Health in North

Labasa Office
Few youths in the Northern Division have volunteered to provide assistance towards the provision of masks and soaps to assist the Ministry of Health in its bid to support frontline health workers with PPEs during this COVID 19 pandemic period according to Minister Parveen Bala.

Minister Bala said, that this initiative has been made possible through a close collaboration between the Ministry of Youth and Sports office in the Northern Division and the Labasa District Youth Council.

Manager Northern Mr Walter Matalau, says that these youth volunteers had practically undergone sewing training and soap making through the Ministry’s Skills and Empowerment program and are willing to give something back to their communities. The youth skills learnt and applied is timely and we are so delighted that our youths have come forward to assist our country and our people during challenging times.

Currently there are four youths engaged in this activity with the help of Youth Officers and President of the Labasa District Youth Council Mr Shaneel Mohammed. The team is currently operating from the Ministry of Youth and Sports office in the North whilst observing to the COVID 19 rules and social distancing and hygiene practices.

Meanwhile Mr Mohammed says that this exercise will hopefully expand to a bigger scale if the pandemic persists and he is also thankful to youth club leaders who are contributing through the provision of raw materials to ensure sustainable production.

So far the team has produced 120 masks and 150 hand washing soaps and these will be handed over to the Commissioner Northern who will give it to our Ministry of Health for their front line workers as part of their PPE.

The Minister for Youth and Sports Hon Parveen Bala has applauded the initiative and believes that his Ministry is taking heed of his advice to always think outside the box. “Youths are talented, innovative and very energetic, they need proper guidance and advice. Once this energy and innovation is channeled positively we will reap great rewards” he said.

The Ministry will be contacting ex-trainees in Sewing and Soap making to assist where possible and necessary arrangements will be made for them to work from home and in principle adhering to safe and hygiene practices of COVID 19.
