The Uprising Beach Resort in Deuba last week hosted participants of the Ministry of Youth and Sports funded Hospitality training which was facilitated by the Service Pro International Tourism & Hospitality Institute.

Attended by Thirty youths from the greater Navua and Deuba areas, the training focused mainly on two aspects of the hospitality industry namely Food and Beverage and Housekeeping services.

Recognising the need for the training Ministry of Youth’s Administrator for the Serua province Joseva Tuqiri made arrangements noting the high number of youths being absorbed into the workforce without formal qualifications.

“There is quite a number of our young people working in hotels and resorts who are doing the job but have not received any training or awareness on the aspects of their duties and these were the youth’s targeted for the training,” Mr Tuqiri said.

“We’ve had participants coming from as far as Beqa Island to attend this training and I am sure all of them returned to their work enlightened and empowered after the training with facilitators from Service Pro International,” he adds.

“We have noted after previous trainings that properly trained employees are more confident in their work and that confidence extends to the customer in an increased level of service and knowing how to handle food, drinks, and related consumables properly extend beyond the kitchen,” said Mr Tuqiri. “Those are some of the important outcomes of these trainings and I am glad that the group trained at the Uprising Resort fully grasped what was taught which was due to the experiences they had accumulated in the short time they were being employed at the various resorts around Deuba.”

“We also acknowledge the support of Uprising Resort towards the youths in allowing us to use their facilities which was a sort of hands on experience for our participants and tremendously assisted us in conveying the syllabus,” Mr Tuqiri acknowledged.

Officiating at the closing of the training Assistant Minister for Youth and Sports Honourable Alipate Nagata encouraged the youths to believe in themselves.

“I again reiterate my message to all young Fijians to believe that they can achieve greater things,” he told participants.

“I am told that the majority of you are already employed in the hospitality industry and am confident that your training during the week has enable you to accrue sound knowledge and skills and motivate you to create a more productive and satisfying lives which will further increase your chances of finding employment in other areas of the hospitality industry,” Hon. Nagata further said.

Hon. Nagata further encouraged the youths to continue their education develop their acquired skills. A resident of Navua himself Hon. Nagata also told participants that he is optimistic that the training will contribute to their success in the future.

Navua lass Leonie Maria Wise while thanking the Ministry also said that she had benefitted from the training which will be put to use at her workplace at the Nanuku Resort.

“I really enjoyed myself for the last four days especially in learning new skills and I will motivate myself to keep training and dedicate myself to the work I do. This has been a worthwhile experience and I am confident that I will return to work a better person having acquired sound knowledge on the services we were trained on,” Ms Wise said.
