Production on a youth farm in Ovalau is set to increase with the recent donation of farm house materials by the Ministry of Youth and Sports. 

Officiating at the handing over ceremony, Assistant Minister for Youth and Sports, Mr Iliesa Delana, commended the members of the Tuvaka Youth Club in Rukuruku Village, Ovalau for their passion and hard work. 

“Now that the youth club has been assisted with the farm house, the farming program should be achievable every month and year to ensure that within a few years there would be some successful farmers within this club” Honourable Delana said.

The youth club, which has a membership of 20 young men and women, has turned to farming as a source of income and livelihood.

Farming yaqona and dalo the youths have been unable to achieve their target due to the distance of the farm from their village.

The materials which were funded by the Ministry will boost the youth’s food security programme and their income generating project.

Group leader, Mr Epeli Waqa, said the intended outcome from the donation would be an increase in production.

“With the availability of the farm house, our youth group can now achieve higher production as we will be able to spend more time on the farm and only returning to the village on weekends” he said.

“The best part is that it will make things easier for two of our members who are physically challenged.”

“We are grateful for the assistance as it shows the commitment of Government towards the development of youths on our island which will directly contribute towards the development of our village” said Mr Waqa.

The group is also committed to a 3 year development plan for their village
