School becomes first to receive Awards in the Central Division

Suva, November 23 - Wainibuka Secondary School became the first school in the Central Division to receive bronze medals as part of the Ministry’s Duke of Edinburgh International Awards yesterday.

Twelve participants from the secondary school received the bronze medals during the school’s annual prize giving day.

The Minister for Youth and Sports, Honourable Laisenia Tuitubou, commended the students for their efforts in undertaking the program and successfully completing it.

“I congratulate the students of Wainibuka Secondary School in undertaking the intensive Awards program,” he said.

“The Awards program is now available to all 14 to 24 year olds in Fiji who can join the 8 million young people across the globe who have been inspired by the Duke of Edinburgh International Award.”

The Minister further stated that the Award is internationally recognised as one of the world’s leading youth achievement awards.

While officiating at the Awards ceremony, the Ministry’s Divisional Manager Central, Mr Iowane Soko, said “the Duke of Edinburgh International Awards are beneficial as they help students to realise their career path,” he said.

“The program can also give young people the chance of doing something new and draw on experiences from the program whenever they are faced with any difficulties in life.”

One of the Award recipients, also the Wainibuka Secondary School head boy and the dux for the Year, Mr. Jope Sukunamoce said “The program has boosted my leadership skills as the Head Boy. It has has enlightened me in managing my time well and assisting those who need help in my community.”
