Suva, 24 October 2017 – The Ministry of Youth and Sports, Training Centre in Valelevu, received assistance in terms of computer skills and self-defence training from the International Youth Fellowship (IYF), yesterday.
The volunteers from the IYF from Australia are in the country to provide training in basic computer literacy, self-defence skills (taekwondo) and spreading the word of gospel.
A volunteer with the IYF and current computer skills trainer, Mr. Jun Young Ko, said he was delighted to be in the country and was looking forward to working with the youths from the Youth Training Centre, Valelevu.
“We had the first basic computer skills training this morning and we were overwhelmed with the dedication and enthusiasm shown by the youths,” he said.
“Computer skills are mandatory for communication or work purposes and as such we wish to provide these youths with the basic knowledge how to use basic Microsoft Office tools like powerpoint presentations, word documents, picture formatting and so forth,” Mr. Ko said.
The Minister for Youth and Sports, the Honourable Laisenia Tuitobou, acknowledged the assistance provided by the touring group.
“The Ministry continues to welcome groups that are ready to upskill youths in Fiji,” he said. “This training is important as it will provide the youths techniques in learning the fundamental principles of using a computer or learn the art of self-defence.”
“Computer skills are an essential component in the 21st century,” the Honourable Minister said. “We use computers to communicate and share information on a daily basis, hence the Ministry sees this as an opportunity to upskill the youths in our training centre.”
Volunteers from the IYF will be in the country for the next two weeks and will be working closely with the Ministry of Youth and Sports in delivering training to the youths.
