MINISTRY SIGNS FIRST MOU FOR MORE VOLUNTEERS ON YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
The Ministry of Youth and Sports has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) cementing its relationship and ongoing collaboration with the Peace Corps.
The first of its kind MOU will see more volunteers serving in different areas of the ministry to complement the work of sectors such as education and health.
Ministry of Youth and Sports Permanent Secretary Alison Burchell said the Ministry currently has five volunteers working with its officials in Vunidawa, Suva, Labasa and Savusavu and, as part of the MOU they can now look forward to welcoming more.
“We have found the contributions of volunteers from all walks of life but with significant expertise to be invaluable to the development of our programmes. We are both committed to youth development and to working together to give practical and long-lasting meaning to this”.
Ms Burchell said they are honoured to be the first Ministry to sign a MOU with Peace Corps and hopes that their partnership will go a long way.
Peace Corps Fiji country director Dennis McMahon said they are delighted to have an opportunity to support the mission of the Ministry as they work together to address the needs for youth development in Fiji.
Mr McMahon said the Peace Corps has been working with the Ministry since 2015 and the establishment of this MOU represents an affirmation of its commitment to continue their work in support of Fiji’s youth.
Peace Corps’ current program in Fiji includes the Community Youth Empowerment Project (CYEP) which involves a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Education.
With its focus on enabling positive youth development, volunteers work in schools, Ministry offices and communities around the country, facilitating life skills education and youth leadership activities, and support youth organizations to engage in a range of community development projects.
