MOU will benefit more rural youths: Burchell

 

Suva, April 27 – More youths especially those in rural and maritime areas will benefit from the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Ministry for Education, Heritage and Arts and the Ministry for Youth and Sports on Wednesday.

 

The two Ministries signed the MOU to formalise the partnership between the Ministry and Youth and Sports and Technical College of Fiji as accredited training provider for Fijian youths.

 

Permanent Secretary for Youth and Sports, Ms Alison Burchell, said; “This MOU between the two Ministries will ensure youths acquire accredited training and receive certificates of competence that can contribute more to their future development.”

 

“Youths through our cooperation with the Technical College of Fiji will have more options to choose from,” said Ms Burchell. “It is important for young people to be provided more choices for their future.”

 

Ms Burchell added that recently the Youth and Sports Ministry and Technical College have facilitated six training courses together in the community setting.

 

“We hope to work together more often towards breaking the gender stereotypes and perceptions that commonly exist in Fiji and include more young women in our rural training,” said Ms Burchell.

 

Permanent Secretary for Education, Heritage and Arts, Mr Iowane Tiko said; “This MOU will expedite both Ministries’ commitment to reach out and provide access to education, to youths and many more in the rural and maritime communities.”

 

The Technical College of Fiji is conducting training in basic carpentry for young men and women in Nailuva village in the interior of Ra this week in partnership with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation. 

 

This forms part of the support being given to the communities devastated by Tropical Cyclone Winston as they build back better.
